After an enviable military career, he became involved in the building of civil society in Croatia as a member of Parliament and a businessman. He is one of the founders of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts (currently the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts), the first amateur photographer in Croatia and a renovator of the Trakošćan Castle. In the mid-19th century, he renovated the castle in the Neo-Gothic style and transformed the fort into a romantic castle with a park and a lake at the base.
