Inscription plaque; gatehouse, first courtyard
Lithothamnium limestone, carved 60 x 120 cm, 16th – 17th century
A square stone plaque is embedded in the outer courtyard wall of the gatehouse of the Trakošćan Castle. The plaque is badly damaged, especially the central part. It stood on the
outer wall surfaces, hence, the inscription is difficult to read. In a narrow-profiled strip, there is a longer Latin text of seven lines carved in letters of fairly regular lines. According to the type of letters, the plaque could date to the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century. The text mentions Bishop Ivan Drašković and Ivan and Hanibal with their military merits. The inscription refers to some modifications of the castle in the 16th century.
