Tower, bergfried; first floor level
The tower is the oldest part of the castle, and some of its parts are now incorporated into the lower part of the central tower, i.e. the keep. The Trakošćan bergfried is tall and has strong walls and it is the core of the fort. It was an observation post and the main point of defence, and in the event of attackers’ break-in, it was also a refuge and the last point of defence. The entrance was always elevated, so you had to cross a ramp or use a ladder to go directly to the first floor. In some burgs, there was a drawbridge in this place. These towers did not have a basement so that they could not be undermined. On the ground floor there was a vaulted dungeon. The remains of the vault, not those from the earliest period, are still visible today.
